COSMAC Elf VCF Edition

DESCRIPTION

The COSMAC Elf was the first microcomputer that an average person could afford to build, and the COSMAC Elf construction project first appeared in Popular Electronics magazine exactly 30 years ago. In this workshop we will assemble a special VCF version of the Spare Time Gizmos COSMAC Elf 2000 kit, and when we are finished you will have a complete, functional copy, including your very own COSMAC CDP1802 chip, of the original Elf.

The special VCF version of the Elf 2000 kit comes with the main PC board components, including sockets for all ICs, already soldered. In the workshop we will install the ICs, wire the switch panel, and finish the mechanical assembly. Only lightweight soldering will be required and anyone, even a beginner, should have no problem completing this kit.

To speed and simplify the assembly process, the special VCF version of the Elf 2000 kit has all the optional components removed and only contains the circuits that were present in the original Elf. The PC board used by the VCF version is the same as the standard Spare Time Gizmos Elf 2000, however, and you can expand your VCF kit into a full fledged Elf 2000 at any time simply by adding the missing components.

You can read all about the Spare Time Gizmos COSMAC Elf 2000 kit, and download a 100 page instruction and assembly manual, from our web page

INSTRUCTOR

Bob Armstrong is a hardware and software design consultant in Silicon Valley. He has worked on process control and automation software for semiconductor manufacturing, several different EDA software products, image enhancement and Braille display devices, automobile traffic-monitoring systems, and flat panel LCDs for computers and HDTV. In his spare time, Bob also runs Spare Time Gizmos, which produces open source electronic projects and kits for hobbyists.

PREREQUISITES AND TOOLS

The main PC board for the special VCF Elf 2000 kit is pre-assembled and only basic soldering skills will be required to complete the kit. Anyone who has used a soldering iron before should have no difficulty. In addition to your favorite soldering iron and solder, you should also bring basic hand tools such as wire cutters, wire strippers, and a small Philips screwdriver.

The special VCF Elf 2000 kit is complete, including a power supply and a plastic mounting frame, and other than the tools, Spare Time Gizmos will supply everything you need to run all the example programs from the original Popular Electronics COSMAC Elf articles.

REGISTRATION

The price for the VCF Elf 2000 kit is $165 and includes admission to the workshop at VCF.  To reserve your kit and sign up for the workshop please use order below.  All special VCF kits will be delivered at the 2006 Vintage Computer Festival and you must attend VCF in order to claim you kit!  I'm afraid California sales tax of 8.25% is mandatory even if you will be visiting from out of state, but on the positive side you won't have to pay any shipping charges.
